Who’s ready for this Republican shit show?

Thursday night will be an entertaining one.

Fox News will be airing the first Republican primary debate. Thus far, the approximately 20 candidates who are running have been viewed as a punchline. But then we all must remember — one of these doofuses will actually be on the Republican ticket come November 2016. And they could actually win.

It’s a terrifying thought for Democrats. But it’s reality.

Some people will be watching on Thursday for comedic value. Others will listen closely to learn who of the bunch is truly presidential. The rest will watch the season premiere of Project Runway on Lifetime channel.

Republican debateSo who made the cut for the primetime debate? Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Chris Christie, Ben Carson, Mike Huckabee and John Kasich.

If that’s not a lineup that inspires hope and enthusiasm, I don’t know what is. It’s like a real-life version of the Muppet Show.

The rest of the candidates will be featured in an earlier, 5 p.m. debate. But let’s face it, that’s the kiddie table.

We can expect anything and everything. Trump to be crass, Huckabee and Cruz to be a narrow-minded bigots, Christie being a dickbag, and Rubio trying to be the cool, young guy. And I fully expect Kasich to never say a word.

There’s really no more chance of redemption for the Republican field. Trump has made a mockery of the party, and the worst thing is — people like it. He’s leading the polls and it’s pretty obvious that some of the things he’s said in the last several weeks have somehow been met with an agreement by a giant sect of the American public.

Gone are the days when we’d expect a brilliant, well-spoken go-getter to run for our nation’s highest office. No more Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. In 2015, it appears we’re willing to support the person who makes the most headlines.

An interesting subplot is that Thursday night is also Jon Stewart’s last show. He tapes it early in the day, so it’ll be very interesting to see if he chooses to do things differently to cover the debate. We can only hope so. Because we need him to hilariously put everything in perspective.

It’s the perfect way to go out. There’s going to be endless material from this debate.

Either way, all I know if that it is going to be a shit show.

And the real loser is us.
